When It Is Time for Light Installation

Lighting problems rarely announce themselves loudly. A few small clues usually mean it is worth booking someone in.

  • A pendant, downlight or ceiling fan light has stopped working, and flicking the switch does nothing.
  • You are renovating a room and want new downlights instead of a single centre light.
  • The existing ceiling rose or batten holder looks scorched, cracked or loose.
  • You are replacing old halogen downlights with LEDs to cut down on running costs.
  • Outdoor lighting needs weatherproof fittings that the current setup does not have.
  • A switch feels warm, buzzes, or sparks slightly when you flick it.

Light Installation: What We Actually Do

There is usually more to a lighting job than the fitting itself.

Pendant and batten fittings. Swapped, rewired or relocated, with the ceiling junction checked before anything new goes up.

Downlight retrofits. Old halogen cans come out, LED downlights go in, and insulation clearances get checked as we go.

Ceiling fan lights. Combined fan and light units get their own switching, not bundled onto a shared circuit.

Outdoor and weatherproof fittings. Sensor lights, step lights and IP-rated fittings suited to being outside year-round.

New circuits for extra points. Where a room needs more light than the existing wiring allows, we run a new circuit rather than overload an old one.

Clipsal and Hager switching. Dimmers, sensors and switch plates fitted with name-brand gear, not budget imports.

The Factors Behind a Light Installation Quote

Pricing shifts from job to job, depending on a handful of things.

  • How many fittings are going in, and whether each one is a straight swap or a new position.
  • Ceiling access, particularly in older homes where the roof cavity is tight or hard to reach.
  • Whether a new circuit or extra switching needs to be run for the job.
  • The fittings themselves, from a basic batten holder to a designer pendant.
  • Any wiring the inspection flags as needing attention while we are already up there.

Everything is confirmed on paper before work goes ahead, and the price we quote is the price you pay. First-time customers also get $50 off.

What We See in Brookvale Homes

Mitchell Road sits among the mix of fibro cottages, brick veneer homes and rendered facades that make up a lot of residential Brookvale.

Each material behaves differently once you are up in the ceiling. Fibro sheeting needs proper backing before it can safely carry a heavy pendant.

Rendered walls make external wiring runs trickier too. Chasing a cable through render risks cracking the finish if it is rushed.

We match the fixing method to the material every time, rather than treating every ceiling the same.

A lot of the 1960s and 1980s brick flats around here were also built with one central light per room and nothing else. Adding downlights or a second switch usually means running new cable, not just hanging a fitting.

Standards and Paperwork, Explained Simply

Lighting circuits fall under AS/NZS 3000, the same as any other circuit in the house.

A new circuit or any significant rewiring behind the fitting counts as notifiable electrical work, and we lodge a Certificate of Compliance once it has been tested.

A simple like-for-like fitting swap usually will not need paperwork lodged, though the wiring behind it is held to the same rules regardless.

DIY electrical work, including lighting, is illegal in NSW. Even a straightforward pendant needs a licensed electrician.

Our Light Installation Process, Start to Finish

Most straightforward lighting jobs wrap up in a few hours. A full-room downlight retrofit is more likely to fill an entire visit.

  1. Confirm the plan. We walk through fitting positions and switching with you before touching a tool.
  2. Isolate and open up. Power is cut at the board, and the ceiling or wall is opened only as far as it needs to be. On fibro or rendered homes this step takes extra care so the surface is not damaged.
  3. Fit and wire. New fittings go in, wired and secured properly, with insulation clearances checked around any downlights.
  4. Test and hand over. Every circuit is switched on and tested before we leave, with a rundown of what has been done.

The Difference on a Light Installation Job

Every fitting goes up properly, not just quickly.

Every fitting we install is backed for life on workmanship, and coming back to adjust it later never costs you in labour. The gear itself carries a twelve-month product warranty, held separately.

We use name-brand switching over budget imports, and the difference shows up in how long the gear lasts.

Every visit finishes with drop sheets down and the place left tidy, not a pile of old fittings and packaging for you to deal with.

Light Installation Across Brookvale and Surrounding Areas

Light installation often rides along with other residential electrician work, or gets booked once switchboard upgrades free up extra capacity for new circuits.

Common questions

Brookvale Light Installation FAQs

Six questions Brookvale homeowners ask us most about light installation.

How do I prepare for the job?

Clear the area under where we are working and let us know about any fittings you want kept or moved. Everything else, we bring.

Does the age of the house change how light installation is done?

Older ceilings and fibro sheeting need different fixing methods than a new plasterboard ceiling, so yes, age changes our approach. The fitting itself does not change, just how we get it up safely.

Can I supply my own gear, or do you bring the materials?

Both options are fine by us. Hand us a pendant or fitting you have already bought and we will wire it in, or pick something from what we stock and we will fit that instead.

How is light installation covered if something fails later?

If a fitting we installed plays up down the track, sorting it out costs nothing in labour, covered under the lifetime guarantee. The fitting itself has its own twelve-month cover on top.

Is any house too old for light installation?

No. We have fitted lighting in everything from original post-war cottages to brand-new builds. The ceiling material changes the method, not whether it is possible.

What usually tells people they need light installation?

A dead pendant, a flickering downlight, or wanting to switch from halogen to LED are the three we hear most often. A warm or buzzing switch is worth acting on sooner rather than later.
